CLEMSON — Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney was asked a couple of questions regarding his coaching staff during Monday’s conference call with the media.
Swinney was asked if he expects to make any staff changes or shuffle any coaching responsibilities during the Tigers’ open date.
“No, we are just trying to get ready and see if we can get everybody doing a better job,” Swinney said. “That’s all of us, players and coaches. We’ve got good people and we are going to rally and work our butts off to put a good plan together and see if we can go win the next game.”
The next game will be against Duke on Nov. 1 at Memorial Stadium. The Tigers and Blue Devils both have Saturday off before playing in 12 days. Kick is set for noon on the ACCN.
The Tigers are coming off a 35-24 loss to SMU at home, marking the program’s fifth straight home loss to a Power Conference opponent. It is the first time the program has suffered a streak this long since the 1970 and 1971 seasons.
It has been more than a year since Clemson beat a Power Conference opponent.
The coaching staff is being question because Clemson seems to be struggling in almost every area of the game. The run game and the offensive line has been bad all season. The play calling has been a question mark at times, receivers have dropped passes, defenders are out of position and most importantly, the team is not playing complimentary football.
The loss to SMU last Saturday dropped the Tigers to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in the ACC.
“The bottom line is we did not earn the right to win, and SMU did,” Swinney said. “We did not play complimentary football like we did the last couple of games. Defensively, we stopped them, and then we did not score. Then offensively, we would score and the defense could not stop them.
“We just could not really put it together. They out-executed us and out-coached us on some critical plays and we did a poor job in some of those areas.”
Swinney was asked if he has considered making coaching changes at any point during the season, even before the SMU result.
“I am just focused on having a good Monday practice,” he said. “That is it. That is all that I’m focusing on.”
Clemson’s offense ranks 11th in the ACC, averaging just barley 400 yards a game (400.7), while ranking 13th in the league in scoring (26.0 ppg). The Tigers rank 11th in the conference in rushing yards per game (116.4), 11th in third down conversions (38.7) and 11th in red zone conversions (60 percent TD rate).
