Swinney Gives Injury Update on Klubnik

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney held a Zoom conference call with the media on Monday evening and gave an injury update on starting quarterback Cade Klubnik.

Of course, Klubnik did not play in last Saturday’s loss to SMU, snapping his 34-game starting streak. The senior signal caller sprained an ankle in the win at Boston College on Oct. 11.

After the SMU game, Swinney said Klubnik did everything he could to get better. He was in the building early all week and did everything he could to play, but he just wasn’t ready. “I’ve never had a guy try as hard as him to be able to play,” Swinney said. “He truly did everything that he could to give himself a chance. He just couldn’t push off like he needed to.”

Swinney added that Klubnik’s injury does not require surgery. On Monday evening, Swinney updated his starting QB’s status, noting the Tigers are fortunate to be on a bye this week.

“He is better today,” Swinney said. “He is making improvements. So this is a good time from an injury standpoint.

Redshirt sophomore Christopher Vizzina started in place of Klubnik vs. SMU, completing 29 of 42 passes for 317 yards and three touchdowns.

Over the first six games this season, Klubnik completed 65.8 percent of his passes for 1,530 yards and 11 touchdown passes with five interceptions, while also rushing 104 yards and two more scores.

Following an open date this weekend, the Tigers (3-4, 2-3 ACC) return to the field on Saturday, Nov. 1 against Duke at Memorial Stadium (noon, ACC Network).
