Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney held his weekly radio show Monday night and gave the latest update on star wide receiver Bryant Wesco Jr.
As you know, Wesco suffered a scary injury in Clemson’s game against SMU on Oct. 18.
The sophomore was injured during a punt return in the third quarter, when he was flipped up in the air by an SMU defender and landed on his head/neck area. Though he got up and walked off the field, Wesco eventually left the game and was transported to a nearby hospital.
During his weekly teleconference on Oct. 20, Swinney gave an update on Wesco, saying prayers were answered with his injury. Swinney revealed that Wesco suffered a back injury, but there’s no fracture, and he was released from the hospital.
Swinney called it a “very serious” injury and said there were “a lot of unknowns for the first 24 hours or so,” but that it turned out to be a “best-case scenario.” Swinney said that Wesco will be out for the season, but is expected to make a full recovery.
During his weekly radio show Monday night, Swinney said Wesco is “doing great” and the long-term prognosis is “great” as well.
Swinney said Wesco flew to Pittsburgh for a second opinion from a doctor there, and that doctor is on the same page as the doctor in South Carolina.
“Bryant’s doing great,” Swinney said. “He flew to Pittsburgh today to see the doctor up there, just to get another opinion from the doctor here. Both the doctors are on the exact same page and have advised him on what he needs to do moving forward. But he’s doing great, and again, very, very fortunate that it wasn’t worse. The prognosis and long-term projection of everything is great. Expect him to make a full recovery and all that stuff.”
Swinney added that Wesco will be limited this spring ahead of his junior season in 2026.
“He definitely will be out for this season, and we’ll limit him this spring as far as no contact and all that type of stuff, and just take a ton of precaution on him,” Swinney said. “But as long as nothing crazy happens, we expect he’ll be back next year.”
Wesco, Clemson’s leading wide receiver, finished with 31 catches for 537 yards and six touchdowns this season.
