When Clemson offered DJ Huggins early this week, it marked a special moment for the 2027 wideout.
Not only was Huggins just the second wide receiver in his class to pick up an offer from the Tigers, it also marked his first from a Power-4 program.
“It means a lot,” Huggins told The Clemson Insider. “I have put in a lot of work, so it definitely means a lot. People see that I have. So it definitely means a lot, for sure.”
Head coach Dabo Swinney called Huggins personally to deliver the news.
“Coach Swinney FaceTimed me and said I had been working hard and he said they were going to offer me,” Huggins said. “The second in the class of ’27 for the receiver position. He kept saying I earned it.”
Huggins worked out at camp back in June and then returned for the season-opener against LSU.
“The atmosphere up there is great,” Huggins added. “Definitely enjoyed it. It was a night game, so it was a nice atmosphere.”
Now that he has the offer, Huggins has set a date for a return visit. He plans to be on hand when the Tigers host Florida State on November 8.
“To just keep building that relationship,” Huggins said. “Definitely think that is the biggest thing. I am not really in a rush, so keep building that relationship I have with Coach (Tyler) Grisham and to keep building it with Coach Swinney.”
Nine games into his junior campaign, the 5-foot-11 prospect has 53 catches for 906 yards with 11 touchdowns. He’s also rushed for two touchdowns.
While he is still extremely early in the process, after two visits, Huggins already has a very favorable impression of Grisham.
“He knows what he is talking about for sure,” Huggins said. “I definitely like his energy. The way he talks about things and breaks stuff down. And his passion.”
UNLV, Kennesaw State, Memphis, Georgia State and Florida Atlantic make up Huggins’ other offers.
He’s already taken game-day visits to Georgia Tech and Tennessee this season and after his upcoming visit to Clemson for the FSU game, Huggins said he is considering getting to Alabama when the Tide hosts Oklahoma on November 15.
However, at this time, the talented wideout is planning to take things slow and just enjoy the process. The goal for now is just finding out which schools are a potential fit.
“What school can develop me and make me the best player I can be?” Huggins said. “What is the best academic fit for me. There are other things for sure, but I think really those are the ones that stand out. Who I have that real connection with, a genuine connection.”
