Lawrence Fires Back at Criticism from Giants Legend

Former Clemson star Dexter Lawrence didn’t take kindly to the criticism he received from a New York Giants legend.

Carl Banks said “nobody respects” Lawrence due to the Giants star defensive tackle’s performance this season.

“Nobody respects you anymore — nobody,” said Banks, a two-time Super Bowl champion and 1987 Pro Bowl/All-Pro linebacker with the Giants, who is currently a radio broadcaster for the team.

Lawrence was asked about Banks’ criticism on Wednesday and fired back, saying that Banks is “delusional.”

“He’s delusional,” Lawrence said, via the New York Post. “His words are delusional.”

Banks made his comments on a podcast following New York’s 38-20 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. Lawrence recorded three tackles, half a sack and one quarterback hit in that contest.

In eight games this season, Lawrence has 20 tackles (one tackle for a loss), 0.5 sacks, an interception, three passes defended and four quarterback hits.

According to ESPN, Lawrence is being double-teamed at a league-high 74.9% rate on his pass rush opportunities this season, and he was doubled at a 74.5% rate last year.

“I get a lot of attention,” he said, via the New York Post. “Check the numbers. Check those numbers.”

Lawrence was enjoying a stellar 2024 season before he saw it end early with an elbow injury on Nov. 28 against the Dallas Cowboys. In his 12 games last season, the 6-foot-4, 340-pounder posted a career-high 9.0 sacks and 8.0 tackles for loss while also recording 44 total tackles, 16 quarterback hits, a forced fumble and one pass defended.

Lawrence earned his third straight Pro Bowl nod last year, becoming the first Giants player to be voted to three straight Pro Bowls since safety Landon Collins from 2016-18. If Lawrence hadn’t suffered a season-ending elbow injury, he could have very well earned his third consecutive AP All-Pro selection as well.

Lawrence says the dislocated elbow that cut his 2024 season short is not a problem.

“My elbow is not an issue,” he said, via ESPN.

“I think I’m playing well, yes,” Lawrence added, when asked if he is satisfied with his performance this season, via the New York Post.

Entering this season, the 27-year-old Lawrence had racked up 310 total tackles, 36 tackles for loss and 30 sacks in 92 career games (85 starts) since being selected by the Giants in the first round (17th overall) of the 2019 draft.

Per the New York Post, Lawrence was asked if the criticism from Banks could motivate him moving forward.

“Nah, but if people listen to him … let’s say this — I hope people start trying to disrespect me. Let’s say that,” Lawrence said. “I hope they start not respecting me ‘cause that’s not what’s showing on the field. They’re showing a lot of respect on the field.”

Lawrence and the Giants return to the field this Sunday to host the San Francisco 49ers in Week 9.
