Clemson Cruises to Easy Win Over Gardner-Webb

CLEMSON — Clemson had four different players hit the double-digit mark in scoring as the Tigers cruised to a 97-59 win over Gardner-Webb on Tuesday night inside Littlejohn Coliseum.

Nick Davidson led the way with a game-high 18 points, while also pulling down six rebounds, five of which came on the offensive end.

Carter Welling netted the first double-double of his Clemson career, finishing with 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting, while grabbing 11 boards. Five of his also came on the offensive glass.

RJ Godfrey also added 13 points, as the senior was 5-for-5 from the floor, with four rebounds.

Ace Buckner also notched 11 points.

Clemson (2-0) won the opening tip with Dillon Hunter scoring on a driving layup to kickstart what would be a 16-3 run to start the game. The Tigers would never look back, shooting 49% in the first half to take a 45-30 lead into the break. Clemson led by as many as 22 in the opening half, but the team hit a stretch where they shot just 2-of-12 from beyond the arc to allow the Bulldogs to close the gap.

Hunter and Jestin Porter would hit back-to-back three-pointers to start the second half, igniting a 14-2 run that quickly pushed the lead out to 27 at 59-32. Clemson would lead by as many as 41 at one point late in the second half.

Sharing the Wealth

Clemson had 25 assists as a team in the win. Zac Foster had a team-high five, with Chase Thompson, Godfrey, Hunter, Buckner and Porter each finishing with three. The Tigers really moved the ball well in this one.

Defensive Pressure

The Tigers really put the pressure on the Bulldogs for much of the contest, forcing 16 turnovers and turning those into 22 points. Nine of those turnovers came in the first half.

Offensive Glass

Clemson dominated the offensive boards, pulling down 19 to just 6 for Garner-Webb.

Three-Happy

The Tigers probably got a little too three-happy over the final 10 minutes of the opening half. After starting the game 4-of-7 from three-point land, Clemson missed on 10 of its next 12 from deep. Brownell was clearly unhappy with some of the shot selections.

Freshman Zac Foster was one example, taking a couple of ill-fated shots from deep early on. He finished the opening half 0-for-3 from downtown. Hunter also missed both of his three-point attempts in that opening half.

The Tigers finished the night just 10-of-36 from deep.
