Swinney Asked for Update on Transfer WR’s Eligibility Situation

Clemson senior wide receiver Tristan Smith is on the list of potential Senior Day honorees that Clemson released on Monday ahead of Saturday’s Senior Day game vs. Furman at Memorial Stadium (4:30 p.m., The CW).

However, with Smith having spent his first two seasons at the JUCO level playing for Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College, many have wondered whether or not he could possibly be granted an extra year of eligibility.

There have been several examples of players who have played at the JUCO level being granted extra years of eligibility, most notably Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia.

Smith is attempting to get that extra year, so during his weekly radio show Monday night, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney was asked if he has any update on the process to get another year of eligibility for Smith.

“I don’t, other than just I know there’s a process, and I know he’s going to do everything he can to exhaust the process in seeking another year,” Swinney said.

Smith said last month that if he is able to get another year, he’s having so much fun at Clemson that he is dead set on being back with the Tigers next season.

“If I just so happen to get another year, y’all are going to see me here next year,” Smith said. “I am going to be back right here next year.”

After transferring to Clemson ahead of the 2025 season following an outstanding 2024 campaign at Southeast Missouri State, Smith has tallied 21 receptions for 228 yards and one touchdown in 10 games for the Tigers (three starts).

Last season at Southeast Missouri State, he earned second-team Big South-OVC Football Association all-conference honors after catching 76 passes for 934 yards and six touchdowns in 11 games.

During his time at Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College from 2022-23, Smith had 14 receptions for 140 yards and a touchdown in 10 games in 2023 after catching two passes for 91 yards and a touchdown in seven games as a freshman in 2022.
