Swinney says There’s a Better Place for Portal Window

CLEMSON — Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney says they could put the one-time transfer portal window in November for all he cares, he just wanted one window.

The transfer portal window does not open this month, but Swinney did get what he wanted. College Football will have a one-time transfer portal window, which will open on Jan. 2 and run through Jan. 16.

“That two window stuff, that was crazy,” Swinney said Tuesday during his weekly press conference at the Smart Family Media Center. “I definitely did not like where it was, on the same exact area as high school (signing day). I did not like that, it was not good.”

Swinney said the new portal window is better where it is, but the bad part is that it will force players in the playoffs and national championship race to make a decision before those games.

“Now you have guys that are hurt already and now you have some other kids that will go into the portal, and you are trying to go play in a playoff game, that puts you under a lot of stress,” Swinney said. “Personally, I just think put on the first of February. I think there needs to be a cooling off period.”

Swinney says the cooling off period will help players make more rational decisions and not make them feel rushed or pressured. The Clemson coach also mentioned he will never run off a player, even if the player never takes a snap or contributes to the team.

“Until graduation does us part,” Swinney said.
