South Carolina (4-7) is currently a 2.5-point favorite entering Saturday’s game against Clemson (6-5) in Columbia.
It marks the Tigers’ first time being a betting underdog in the rivalry since 2013.
Is Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney surprised that his team is the underdog?
“I mean, not really,” Swinney said during his weekly Tuesday press conference. “We’re going to a tough place. They’re at home. They beat us last year. Not surprised. Nothing surprises me anymore. There’s very little that surprises me these days. Very little.”
The Tigers are looking to avenge last season’s 17-14 loss to the Gamecocks at Memorial Stadium.
Clemson is 7-2 against South Carolina in the last 10 years, with the two schools not meeting in 2020 due to a cancellation because of COVID. Clemson has won eight of the last 10 meetings in the rivalry overall, though South Carolina has won two of the last three meetings, both at Clemson. The Tigers lead 73-44-4 in the all-time series.
Clemson has won each of its last five road games at South Carolina across the 2015-23 seasons, and a win would give the Tigers six straight road wins against the Gamecocks for the first time since winning in Columbia six straight times across the 1989-99 seasons.
Swinney was asked whether being an underdog is a point of discussion with the team heading into Saturday’s game at Williams-Brice Stadium (12 p.m., SEC Network).
“I don’t ever talk about that stuff. I don’t talk about that,” Swinney said. “We just talk about the game, what we gotta do to win the game. I’m sure somebody else will tell them that. They don’t need me to tell them that.”
