Swinney Gives Injury Update on True Freshman QB

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney met with the media Wednesday evening following the Tigers’ practice, his final media availability ahead of Saturday’s game at South Carolina.

Swinney gave an injury update on true freshman quarterback Chris Denson, who suffered an injury in practice on Monday when he got his foot stepped on, on the scout team, while simulating South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers.

“He was a little better today [in practice],” Swinney said of Denson on Wednesday evening. “So, fortunately it wasn’t anything long-term or anything like that, so that’s a positive.”

Denson is coming off the most extensive action of his young career. The left-handed signal caller had a breakout performance against Furman last Saturday, when he rushed for more than 100 yards in the blowout win over the Paladins, while completing 4-of-4 pass attempts for 22 yards. He also registered the first two touchdowns of his career, one rushing and one passing.

Denson, who enrolled at Clemson in January, was ranked among the top 25 dual-threat quarterbacks in the country for the 2025 recruiting class by Rivals (No. 14) and ESPN (No. 25).

Clemson (6-5) is set to face South Carolina (4-7) on Saturday at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia. The rivalry showdown will kick off at noon and be televised on SEC Network.
