With John Grass being named the new head coach at Samford last week, multiple Clemson assistants are expected to join his staff.
Reports have emerged naming two current members of the Tigers’ support staff who will join Grass at Samford. Of course, The Clemson Insider reported last week that some of Dabo Swinney’s staff would join Grass in Birmingham, Ala.
Dabo Swinney’s son, Drew Swinney, is leaving Clemson to work with wide receivers on Grass’ staff. Swinney is finishing up his third full season on Clemsonโs staff and his first in offensive player development and as assistant wide receivers coach.
Swinney appeared in 40 career games as a wide receiver for the Tigers from 2018-22, playing on Clemson squads that earned four ACC championships, three College Football Playoff berths and the 2018 national title. He recorded 14 career receptions for 96 yards in addition to serving as the teamโs starting holder on placekicks in his final season in 2022.
Paul Tyson, who is in his first season as a member of the support staff, is also joining the Samford staff and is expected to work with the quarterbacks. Tyson served as an offensive player development intern this season.
Clemson signed Tyson out of the transfer portal in December 2022 after stints at Alabama (2019-21) and Arizona State (2022). Tyson served as a player/coach in 2024 when he transitioned to student coaching while retaining his eligibility and roster spot as an emergency quarterback.
