Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua took aim at the ACC on Monday morning and didn’t hold back in his comments.
Bevacqua joined the Dan Patrick Show to discuss the Fighting Irish being left out of the 12-team College Football Playoff in favor of ACC team Miami.
With Notre Dame being a member of the conference in all sports but football, Bevacqua was extremely unhappy with some of the tactics used by the ACC in an effort to get the Hurricanes in over the Irish, who the Hurricanes beat in a head-to-head matchup early in the season.
“I have tremendous respect for Miami. Great team, great school, their athletic director, Dan Radakovich, is a great friend. And all the teams in the ACC. Wonderful universities,” Bevacqua told the Dan Patrick Show on Monday. “We have no gripes about any of the schools in the ACC, but we were mystified by the actions of the conference to attack really their biggest business partner in football and a member of their conference in 24 of our other sports…I wouldn’t be honest with you if I didn’t say they’ve certainly done permanent damage to the relationship between the conference and Notre Dame.”
The ACC took to social media to politic for the inclusion of Miami, with the focus being centered on the Hurricanes’ 27-24 home win over the Irish in Week 1. The ACC Network also replayed that game several times over the weekend leading up to the final rankings reveal.
After the snub, Notre Dame refused to play in a bowl game with ACC tie-ins, electing to opt out instead.
“We didn’t appreciate at that we were singled out repeatedly and compared to Miami. Not by Miami, Miami has every right to do that, but it raised a lot of eyebrows here that the conference was taking shots at us,” Bevacqua added. “And that’s just something we chose to do. We wouldn’t choose to do that. In the future, people might disagree with us, but that is just not something we’d be comfortable with. And again, we don’t have any problem with any of these teams — these are all great teams.”
