A couple of NFL analysts had praise for Trevor Lawrence on Sunday after the former Clemson star quarterback led the Jacksonville Jaguars (9-4) to their fourth straight victory – a 36-19 win over the Indianapolis Colts that put the Jags in sole possession of first place in the AFC South.
Lawrence completed 17-of-30 passes for 244 yards and threw two touchdown passes with no turnovers.
The 26-year-old tossed a 14-yard touchdown pass to Jakobi Meyers with 2:27 remaining in the first quarter, and then later evaded pressure before throwing a strike to Tim Patrick for a 7-yard touchdown with seven seconds to play before halftime.
CBS Sports studio analyst Matt Ryan, the 2016 NFL MVP and a four-time Pro Bowl quarterback, loves what he’s seeing from Lawrence right now.
“I think Trevor Lawrence, the last couple of weeks, it’s been the most consistent football he’s played in his career,” Ryan said. “There’s a maturation. There’s a comfort level that’s coming, of understanding what’s being asked from him.”
Of course, Lawrence was labeled as a “generational prospect” coming out of Clemson, but he has had his ups and downs over the start of his NFL career. Since being drafted No. 1 overall by the Jaguars in 2021, he has experienced his share of success while also battling his share of adversity and struggling with inconsistent play, turnovers and injuries.
Lawrence entered his fifth NFL season in 2025 looking for a bounce-back after an injury-plagued 2024 campaign, when he completed 60.6 percent of his passes for 2,045 yards with 11 touchdown passes and seven interceptions in 10 games before being placed on injured reserve in early December after his shoulder injury and concussion.
Overall this season, Lawrence has completed 59.5 percent of his passes for 2,880 yards and 18 touchdowns with 11 interceptions across 13 games. But he has been on a heater lately, with a 60 percent completion percentage, 882 passing yards and nine total touchdowns over Jacksonville’s four-game win streak.
Sunday against the Colts marked his fourth straight multi-score game, and he also reached at least 225 passing yards for the third consecutive contest.
Former NFL quarterback and current NBC Sports analyst Chris Simms — a third-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2003 NFL Draft who played eight NFL seasons — says “it’s time to start giving him some respect.”
“I mean, this is four games in a row Trevor Lawrence has played pretty good,” Simms said during NBC’s Football Night in America. “It’s a four-game win streak. The Colts, as we know, had been controlling this division. But it’s big throws, not a lot of mistakes right now from Trevor Lawrence. And we know he’s got all the talent in the world to make some backyard plays… He is learning the quarterback position. That’s why his coach loves him. It’s taken a little time, but Trevor’s looking real good.”
The Jaguars signed Lawrence to a five-year, $275 million contract extension (including $142 million fully guaranteed) prior to the 2024 season.
For his NFL career to date, he has a 62.7 completion percentage with 16,695 passing yards, 87 touchdown passes and 57 interceptions. He has also rushed for 1,334 yards and 19 touchdowns on 292 career carries.
Up next for the Jaguars is a home game against the New York Jets this Sunday.
