Jags Coaches Speak Highly of Lawrence’s Growth, Detail

Trevor Lawrence has really turned it on of late.

The former Clemson star quarterback has elevated his level of play in recent weeks, while leading the Jacksonville Jaguars (9-4) to four consecutive wins and five wins in six games since their Week 8 bye.

The Jags are now sitting alone atop the AFC South, thanks in large part to Lawrence starting to hit his stride. During Jacksonville’s four-game win streak, he has completed 60 percent of his passes for 882 yards and accounted for nine total touchdowns with four interceptions.

The former No. 1 overall pick has been even better over the last two games, averaging 236.6 passing yards per game with four total touchdown passes, no interceptions, and a 108.3 passer rating. For comparison, from Weeks 1-12, he averaged 218.8 passing yards per game and had 14 touchdown passes with 11 interceptions and a passer rating of 79.4.

So, what has clicked for Lawrence over the last four weeks, and especially the last two?

Jaguars head coach Liam Coen was asked that question when he met with the media this week and discussed Lawrence’s growth this season.

“He definitely has a great understanding throughout the week of the plan,” Coen said. “He’s worked very hard at going through, I think, some of the reads versus maybe different looks, or what we are expecting versus maybe what could occur, and going through that with Spence [quarterbacks coach Spencer Whipple] and Grant [offensive coordinator Grant Udinski] a lot. He’s been throwing it well.”

In steady rain last Sunday in Jacksonville, Lawrence completed 17-of-30 passes for 244 yards and threw two touchdown passes with no turnovers as the Jags beat the Indianapolis Colts, 36-19, to take sole possession of first place in the AFC South.

“He threw it really well in practice – I know practice doesn’t always carry over, for whatever reason. You try not to overanalyze it that much,” Coen added. “But when we were soaking the ball up pretty good on Thursday, he was spinning it really good, and he has been.

“He’s been throwing it good, I think, for especially the last four weeks. It’s not anything necessarily that’s changed, like about anything that we’ve done with him. I think he’s just starting to feel more and more comfortable within the system and within the guys that he’s playing with.”

Jaguars offensive coordinator Grant Udinski also had praise for Lawrence and the detail he is playing with.

“There are things that show up on TV, or on tape, that are apparent to everybody – like some of the throws. … Some of the plays in the red zone, off schedule, moving around in the pocket – those things are apparent because of how fast he’s playing, the decision he’s making,” Udinski said. “But it’s even little things with making certain calls up front, or the way he’s bringing shifts and motions and timing some of those things up. The details of those things are so minute that people may not notice from an outsider, but they make a big difference to the players that he’s playing with and to us as coaches, the scheme and the system, and little angles being lined up and being executed properly.

“So, those things kind of pay dividends for everybody else in the offense, that don’t always show up on his stat sheet or show up with a completion for him, that everyone’s clapping for him. But those impact the team in a lot of ways.”

Lawrence is obviously enjoying a career resurgence in his fifth NFL season following an injury-plagued 2024 campaign, when he completed 60.6 percent of his passes for 2,045 yards with 11 touchdown passes and seven interceptions in 10 games before being placed on injured reserve in early December after his shoulder injury and concussion.

For his NFL career to date, Lawrence has a 62.7 completion percentage with 16,695 passing yards, 87 touchdown passes and 57 interceptions. He has also rushed for 1,334 yards and 19 touchdowns on 292 career carries.

Up next for the Jaguars is a home game against the New York Jets (3-10) this Sunday. Jacksonville is looking to win its first division title since 2022 and make its first playoff appearance since 2022. That year, Lawrence earned Pro Bowl honors and led the Jags to an incredible comeback victory over the Los Angeles Chargers in the AFC Wild Card playoffs.
