Where do Clemson and Penn State stand in this national outlet’s college football rankings ahead of their upcoming matchup in the Pinstripe Bowl?
Going into bowl season, Clemson is ranked No. 50 in the CBS Sports 136 rankings of every team in the FBS.
Penn State, meanwhile, is ranked four spots behind Clemson at No. 54.
Those rankings are a far cry from where the two teams were in the preseason rankings. Clemson was No. 4 in the preseason CBS Sports 136, while Penn State was No. 2, behind only Texas.
Both the Tigers and Nittany Lions were expected to be national championship contenders, but obviously, things didn’t go as planned for either program.
Penn State sits at 6-6 and made a midseason coaching change, firing James Franklin on Oct. 12 following a 3-3 start including three straight losses. Under interim coach Terry Smith, the Nittany Lions won their final three regular season games, while Dabo Swinney’s Tigers (7-5) rallied from a 3-5 start to finish the regular season on a four-game win streak.
The Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx is set to kick off at noon (ABC) on Dec. 27. The Tigers are currently a 3.5-point favorite over the Nittany Lions, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
This will mark the second time the two teams have met on the football field, with Clemson beating Penn State, 35-10, in the 1988 Citrus Bowl.
