Schieffelin Explains Why He Opted Out of Bowl

CLEMSON — Ian Schieffelin’s football career has come to an end at Clemson.

Dabo Swinney met with the media on Monday, revealing that Schieffelin will not be available when the Tigers face Penn State in the Pinstripe Bowl on December 27. Swinney did not give a reason, only noting that he would not play.

On Monday, Schieffelin released a statement on social media, explaining why he opted out of the bowl game, saying he did so “in order to put myself in the best possible position to return to basketball.”

“It didn’t work out for me the way I wanted, and that’s something Coach Swinney and I talked about before the season – that if this ended up not being what I wanted I could always go back to playing basketball,” Schieffelin wrote.

“With that said, I have opted out of the Bowl Game in order to put myself in the best possible position to return to basketball. It wasn’t an easy decision but to be able to get back on the court as soon as possible I have to begin training and preparing now.

“I’m extremely thankful for all my teammates, coaches, and all the Clemson fans that truly make this place special. Will never regret my decision 5 years ago to be a Tiger. Go Tigers!”

Schieffelin appeared in eight games this season, catching two passes for 10 yards.

Schieffelin joined the football team ahead of fall camp after a stellar four-year career on the hardwood. He was part of one of the most successful runs in school history. He helped lead the Tigers to their second Elite Eight appearance in 2024, the program’s first since 1980.

In his final basketball season, he garnered All-ACC status, while helping Clemson to a 27-7 record, including an 18-2 mark in the ACC. The 27 wins, as well as the 18 conference wins, are both school records for wins in a season.
