Tyler Brown is bracing for a bigger opportunity in Clemson’s upcoming bowl game.
Playing time has been hard to come by at times this season for the redshirt sophomore wide receiver.
But with numerous Clemson players not playing in the bowl game – including starting receiver Antonio Williams, who’s out with a shoulder injury – Brown has a chance to step into a more prominent role.
And he says he’s ready to take advantage of more snaps in the Pinstripe Bowl vs. Penn State at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx on Dec. 27 (noon, ABC).
“Just taking advantage of the opportunity,” Brown said. “When God opens the door, you want to go in that full force. No holding back.”
Brown, an explosive local product of Greenville High School, burst onto the scene as a true freshman in 2023, when he earned a freshman All-American selection after leading Clemson in receptions (52) and receiving yards (531) while catching four touchdown passes.
Unfortunately for Brown, his 2024 season was derailed by injury following his highly productive 2023 debut. Due to an ankle injury, he played in only four regular season games and two postseason games last season, triggering a mid-career redshirt. He caught five passes for 30 yards over those six games (two starts) in 2024.
Then, this year, Brown has had to take a step back as the backup slot receiver behind Williams, a 2025 third-team All-ACC selection with a team-leading 55 receptions for 604 yards and four touchdowns.
However, through the ups and downs, Brown has maintained a positive attitude despite his reduced role over the past two seasons as compared to his freshman campaign.
“When you put your trust in the Lord and having that type of base in your life, you never let your highs get too high and your lows get too low,” Brown said. “I stay levelheaded, put the same type of work in every single day, and the support that my guys never changes – whether if I’m out there making the plays, or just cheering my guys on. I feel like my support stays the same and I try to still take that leadership role in wherever I can do it at.”
In 12 games this season (two starts), Brown has hauled in 19 catches for 160 yards.
Although his opportunities have been limited this season, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney has said he believes Brown has “a lot of great days ahead” over the rest of his career as a Tiger.
Perhaps the Pinstripe Bowl will be one of those great days for the 5-foot-11, 185-pound talent, who has been preparing for his time to shine and is ready to make an impact.
“Been putting in the work all season,” Brown said. “I’ve been ready for the opportunity, and I’m just ready to go show what I can do.”
