Veteran OL Explains Not Opting Out of Bowl Game

Blake Miller has started every game for Clemson at right tackle since he stepped foot on campus before the 2022 season. Now, the hard-nosed iron man is getting ready to start one final game in a Tiger uniform.

Miller will conclude his senior campaign and collegiate career when Clemson faces Penn State in the Pinstripe Bowl.

While some of his teammates elected to opt out of playing in the Pinstripe Bowl to prepare for the NFL Draft, Miller explained why he is choosing to play in the Dec. 27 bowl game.

Miller could have sat out in order to focus on his professional future and NFL career. Head coach Dabo Swinney has said he believes Miller will be “an outstanding pro” and won’t have to “wait long to hear his name called on draft day.”

But instead of opting out, Miller wants to suit up with teammates, and play for the coaching staff, one more time.

“I mean, for me, I love being around the team,” he said. “I love being around the coaches, love being around my teammates, and just wanted to be able to finish things out with them and play one last game together.”

Miller also hopes to help the Tigers (7-5) finish the 2025 season strong and close it out with a fifth straight victory.

“I feel like there’s an awesome opportunity here to really finish the season on a high note, and just finish things out the right way,” he said. “Everything I’ve done, I’ve always wanted to do it as complete as possible. So, just to be able to finish with the team and do things the way I wanna do them is important to me, and be able to spend time with the guys one last time.”

Miller earned first-team All-ACC honors this season, becoming the 25th player in school history to earn at least three career All-ACC selections. This season, he also became the seventh player on record in Clemson history to reach 3,000 career snaps from scrimmage.

Earlier this season, on Nov. 8 vs. Florida State, Miller set the Clemson record for consecutive starts by a non-specialist when he started a 50th consecutive game.

The 6-foot-6, 315-pounder is one of six players on record in Clemson history (Mitch Hyatt, Jay Guillermo, Dalton Freeman, Deshaun Watson and Tajh Boyd) with multiple 950-snap seasons and joined Hyatt as one of only two Clemson offensive tackles on record back to 1986 to record multiple seasons with 950-plus snaps from scrimmage.

Clemson and Penn State will kick off at noon on ABC from Yankee Stadium in New York.
