Hall of Fame QB Explains What Is Working for Lawrence

Former Clemson star Trevor Lawrence has found his groove of late, and he’s coming off the best performance of his pro career last Sunday in Week 15 of the NFL season.

Lawrence made NFL history while accounting for six touchdowns and leading the Jacksonville Jaguars to a 48-20 victory over the New York Jets at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville.

The former No. 1 overall pick completed 20-of-32 passes for 330 yards and threw a career-high five touchdown passes with no interceptions, while also rushing for 51 yards and another score on five carries. In the process, he became the first player in NFL history with 5+ touchdown passes, 1+ touchdown run and 50+ rushing yards in a single game.

NFL Network analyst/Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner recently joined Rich Eisen to explain what is working for Lawerence in Jacksonville.

“He’s playing really well,” Warner said. “We talked to him over in London [where the Jaguars played the Los Angeles Rams in Week 7]. That was kind of earlier in the season, where he said, ‘OK, I’m still kind of getting my feet under me in terms of this offense [under first-year Jaguars head coach Liam Coen], and even some of it is in the run game, because we’ve got a lot of run checks. And so, I’m just trying to get up to speed. I’m getting there, but I’m not there yet.’

“It sure feels like he’s found that groove now. The last three or four weeks, I think he’s played some of his best football. You always ask me who the best quarterback performance was every week — he was going to be my No. 1 on the list, this past week.”

On Wednesday, Lawrence was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week following his historic performance against the Jets.

In addition to his TD passes of 20, 8 and 45 yards to fellow former Clemson star Travis Etienne, Lawrence threw a pinpoint 4-yard TD to Brian Thomas Jr. and a 16-yarder to Bhayshul Tuten.

“It’s one of those scenarios where even when he’s a little bit wrong, it’s right, right now,” Warner said of Lawrence. “And so, he had a touchdown pass to Brian Thomas where I felt like he got off the backside a little bit too early, and the backside defender fell off on the play. But he zipped it in there and made a perfect throw, that it went just off the fingers of the defender and right into Brian Thomas’s hands for a touchdown.

“So, even when he was a little bit off with his read and kind of sped it up too much, he’s playing so well and so perfect that he gets away with some of those plays as well. I mean, so many things are going right.”

Lawrence has had his ups and downs over the start of his NFL career with the Jaguars.

Of course, he was labeled as a “generational prospect” coming out of Clemson, and he has experienced success in his young NFL career – especially in 2022, when he earned Pro Bowl honors and led the Jaguars to the AFC South division title, as well as an incredible comeback victory over the Los Angeles Chargers in the AFC Wild Card playoffs.

However, Lawrence has also battled his share of adversity while struggling with inconsistent play, turnovers and injuries. Last season, he completed 60.6 percent of his passes for 2,045 yards with 11 touchdown passes and seven interceptions in 10 games before being placed on injured reserve in early December after his shoulder injury and concussion.

But this year, Lawrence is obviously enjoying a career resurgence in his fifth NFL campaign. In 14 games, he has completed 59.7 percent of his passes for 3,210 yards and 23 touchdowns with 11 interceptions, while also rushing for 302 yards and six more scores.

Lawrence has certainly hit his stride in recent weeks. He has now gone three straight games without a turnover for the first time in his NFL career. Over the last three games, the 26-year-old has thrown for 803 yards and nine touchdowns, to go with 92 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown.

His 136.7 passer rating against the Jets was the highest of his career.

“We’ve all seen this, right. We’ve seen the moments that say, OK, when this all goes right, this kid has everything you could possibly want to be a top-level, elite quarterback in the league. We just haven’t seen him put it all together,” Warner said. “The last three or four weeks, it’s been put together.

“So now, the question becomes, OK, can he sustain that? Is that what we see the rest of the year? Is that what we see the rest of his career? But right now, Coach Coen is doing a great job of dialing it up, and Trevor Lawrence is locked in and throwing the football really, really well.”

Lawrence and the Jaguars (10-4), who have won five straight games and sit atop the AFC South standings, will travel the play the 12-2 Denver Broncos on Sunday in Week 16.
