Former Clemson staffer Mickey Conn did not stay unemployed long.
The longtime safeties coach with the Tigers has confirmed he is now the new defensive coordinator for John Grass at Samford. Grass left Clemson last month to take over as head coach of the Bulldogs.
The Clemson Insider reported almost a month ago that Conn was heading to Samford with Grass, who has already taken several of the Tigers’ support staff with him, including Paul Tyson, Drew Swinney, Andrew Zow and Brandon Thomas.
However, due to financial considerations, it was beneficial for Conn to wait until after he was dismissed to take a new job.
Head coach Dabo Swinney announced on Monday that Conn would no longer be a part of the program moving forward.
“I’m just so appreciative of Mickey and the great contribution that he’s made at Clemson over the last decade,” Swinney said in a statement. “I’m thankful for his family as well. I’m excited for upcoming opportunities he may have to go and call a defense and take the next step in his career. I’m forever grateful for Mickey and all the outstanding players he’s coached and all the memorable wins and championships we’ve earned together in the last decade.”
Conn started at Clemson as a defensive analyst in 2016, before taking over as safeties coach the following year.
Conn was a part of a Clemson staff that qualified for seven College Football Playoff appearances, including appearances in the national championship games in 2016, 2018 and 2019. Clemson won the 2016 and 2018 National Championships and became the first team in major college football to go 15-0 in a season when they won it all in 2018.
During his time at Clemson, Conn coached three All-Americans, two freshmen All-Americans and one ACC Rookie of the Year in Andrew Mukuba. He also coached four All-ACC performers.
