Clemson basketball made history on Saturday.
The Tigers got 21 points from guard Jestin Porter to defeat Pittsburgh 73-68 at the Petersen Event Center in Pittsburgh. It marked the first time since the ACC began in 1953 that a Clemson team opened conference play with two consecutive road wins.
Clemson (12-3, 2-0 ACC) was winless in its previous 18 opportunities to open conference play with two road wins. The victory was also the Tigers’ 10 consecutive ACC road win, which extended the program record and more than doubled the old one.
Porter was 8-for-12 from the field, including 3-of-6 from 3-point range. His three with 7:11 to play, gave Clemson a 59-56 lead, a lead it did not relinquish the rest of the way. With 6:00 to go, he followed with a second three-pointer for 62-58 lead.
He later added a layup and two free throws to seal the victory.
Clemson also got 14 points apiece from R.J. Godfrey and Nick Davidson, while Butta Johnson added 10 points off the bench. Davidson also came off the bench to score his 14 points.
Johnson was 3-for-5 from behind the arc.
Guard Damarco Minor led the Panthers (7-8, 0-2 ACC) with 17 points. Fellow guard Omari Witherspoon dropped in 14 points, while Roman Siulepa added 12 points and Barry Dunning, Jr., had 10 points.
Overall, the game was tied seven times and there were 14 lead changes. Clemson’s largest lead was 7 points, 73-66 with 17 seconds to play. Pitt’s biggest lead was 4 points, 30-26, with 2:39 to play in the first half.
Pitt’s last lead came at 56-53, which ended when Johnson drained a corner 3-pointer with 8:46 to go.
14 IN A ROW
Thanks to Saturday’s win at Pitt, the Tigers have now defeated Pitt 14 straight time in the series, dating back to January 10, 2015. Seven of those 14 wins have come at Pittsburgh. Clemson is now 14-2 vs. the Panthers since Pitt joined the ACC in 2014.
The Tigers are 14-3 all-time vs. Pitt in the series.
DOMINANCE IN THE PAINT
Clemson dominated the paint in the first half. Led by Godfrey’s 10 first-half points, the Tigers had a 20-8 advantage in the paint. Godfrey was 4-for-4 from the field in the first half.
Godfrey finished with 14 points, while the Tigers finished the game with just a 30-28 lead with points in the paint.
GETTING IT DONE OFF THE BENCH
Clemson once again played well off the bench. The Tigers outscored Pitt 14-3 in the first 20-minutes off the bench, including nine points from Davidson off the bench.
The Tigers finished the afternoon with a 26-19 edge when it came to points off the bench.
NEED BETTER PERIMETER DEFENSE
Clemson’s perimeter defense was not very good in the first half. Pitt led 35-34 at the break, thanks in large part to a 5-for-6 performance from 3-point range in the opening 20 minutes.
The Tigers were much better guarding the perimeter in the second half. The Panthers made just one of 11 3-pointers in the second half.
