Tyler Venables Gets First Coaching Gig

Like father, like son.

After wrapping up his Clemson career, Tyler Venables is following in the footsteps of his dad and becoming a coach.

Tyler, of course the son of former Clemson defensive coordinator and current Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables, has landed his first coaching job.

Tyler, a safety for the Tigers from 2020-25, announced Wednesday that he will be the nickelbacks coach at Samford.

Tyler joins a Samford staff that is littered with former Clemson assistants under John Grass, who now serves as the head coach after finishing his fourth season with the Tigers in 2025.

Tyler’s older brother, former Clemson linebacker Jake Venables, is the new director of football strength and conditioning at Samford.

Tyler said ahead of the 2025 season that he hoped to follow in the footsteps of his father and get into the coaching profession himself after his Clemson career came to an end.

“I think so. Nothing’s certain,” Tyler said this past August.

“I’m waiting for my multi-billion dollar business idea, but I don’t think that’s gonna happen,” he added with a big smile.

Tyler was credited with 122 tackles (6.5 for loss), nine pass breakups, a sack, an interception and a blocked punt in 924 defensive snaps over 63 career games (three starts) during his six-year Clemson career. In 2025, he became the 12th player in Clemson history to appear in 60 career games.

Tyler fought injury for much of the 2023 campaign but served in a student coach capacity, a role befitting a coach’s son.
