Does former Clemson star running back Travis Etienne think he has played his last game as a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars?
Etienne was asked that question on Sunday when he met with the media after Jacksonville’s 2025 season came to an end with a 27-24 loss to the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card Round of the NFL Playoffs.
“I’m really not even focused on that right now, honestly. Not even focused on that,” Etienne said. “Really just gotta just try to soak this one in, man. Not even focused on that right now. It’d be crazy if I did [play last game as a Jaguar], though.”
Etienne is slated to become a free agent this upcoming offseason. 2025 marked the final year of his rookie contract, with Etienne playing on his fifth-year option after being selected by the Jaguars with the 25th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft.
Etienne spoke to the media again on Monday as Jaguars players cleaned out lockers, a day after the Wild Card Playoff loss.
Etienne was asked how quickly he will shift into the business side of things and what his future may hold.
“Honestly, not quickly,” he said. “I think that’s why we hire our agents, why we hire those people. Because I feel like as a human, it’s hard to take the emotional side out of it. I invested five years into this. When I got drafted — I think any player thinks they’re going to retire with the team they get drafted to. You never think about the business side of the game. I think that’s why we have those people to think about those things for us, because as humans, we can act off emotions, and that wouldn’t really be great for my financials or my family and the things that I need in my life.
“So I feel like for me, it’s going to take me a while to get past it, but I’m pretty sure my agent will hit me with some encouraging words or something to help me move forward. I’ll just talk to my family, just be around them and just see where things take us. I’ve never been a part of this process, but just gotta go through it.”
After missing his entire 2021 rookie campaign due to a season-ending Lisfranc injury he suffered in that preseason, Etienne has rushed for 3,798 yards and 25 touchdowns on 897 carries in his NFL career to date, while also catching 168 passes for 1,338 yards and seven more scores.
This season, Etienne surpassed 1,000 yards rushing for the third time in his four active seasons. He ran for 1,107 yards and seven touchdowns on 260 carries, helping the Jaguars to a 13-5 record and their first AFC South title since 2022. He also caught 36 passes for 292 yards and six scores.
Etienne ranks 11th in the NFL in rushing yards this season and 17th in the league in yards from scrimmage with 1,399. He accounted for a career-high 13 total touchdowns.
Though Etienne doesn’t know what the future looks like, he told reporters he “most definitely” still wants to be a Jaguar.
“I feel like when I got drafted here, I wanted to be one of the best running backs to ever put on the jersey,” he said. “I wanted to be remembered like the guys like Fred Taylor, Maurice Jones-Drew, Leonard Fournette – guys who have been here. You want to set that standard. You want to leave a legacy. I feel like I was able to do that at Clemson. That’s why I went there, to create a legacy, to leave a legacy, and I feel like you’ve got people that come to follow that now.
“Obviously you want to do that in the NFL, but it’s just different. It’s not college. It’s different of how everything works, and there’s a business side of it and aspects and things that go into it that I might not ever understand. But it’s not for me to understand. So, I kind of just stop trying to figure those things out and just focus on what I can do on the field, and let everything else take care of itself.”
