CLEMSON — Due to suffering an injury just before the start of the season last year, Dane Moehler is still waiting to make his Clemson debut.
Last February, the right-handed hurler sustained an elbow injury that required surgical repair, and while the battle back to the mound has been difficult, he’s getting closer with each passing week.
As the Tigers opened up preseason practice on Tuesday, head coach Erik Bakich provided an update on the redshirt freshman.
“He is progressing,” Bakich said. “He will probably be on the Talan Bell plan of last year.”
Like Moehler, the left-handed Bell dealt with the same type of injury in the past, which caused him to miss the first few weeks of the 2025 season. Bell didn’t make his debut until March, and even after that was on a strict pitch count for several weeks after returning to the mound.
While Bell made eight starts last season, most were shorter stints. He never went more than four innings in 2025, as the staff took the cautious approach.
Expect that same kind of approach with Moehler once he’s ready to make his debut.
“He maybe makes his debut in March,” Bakich added. “Then, it is controlled outings and progresses as the season goes.”
