Maybe Vizzina or Denson will Prove Me Wrong

CLEMSON — There is one more day left until the transfer portal closes, and thus far, Clemson has covered most of its bases.

There are still a couple of positions the Tigers have not added to their roster, and maybe they will. The good news is the portal will be closed to players entering but not closed to a school going in and adding a player or two to its roster once the deadline has passed. Though, most schools want to have their roster filled by the end of the portal window so they can turn their attention to winter workouts and spring training.

We will see what Clemson does.

Until then, however, the Tigers could still use an offensive lineman and a quarterback. Bringing in a new offensive lineman could happen because Clemson has been active in the portal at trying to bring a new lineman in, but it has been unsuccessful to this point.

As for a new quarterback, one who has experience and could compete for the starting job, that is likely not going to happen. Clemson has not actively looked for a quarterback, and I do not anticipate the Tigers doing it now.

In other words, Clemson’s offense, with all the weapons that it has coming back, and added with Chris Johnson, Jr., will have to get it done with Christopher Vizzina or Chris Denson at quarterback.

Those names do not exactly have you thinking ACC Championship or College Football Playoff, do they?

It makes you wonder if Dabo Swinney’s stubbornness to not pull an experienced quarterback out of the portal will cost the Tigers before spring practice even starts. It is a head scratcher for sure.

Quarterback is the most important position, and right now, at least from what we have seen, the Tigers are WAY behind their competitors.

Clemson has done all these wonderful things in the portal to improve its roster, yet, at the most important position on the team, its head coach wants to stay loyal because Vizzina has waited his turn.

And that is great for Vizzina, and Swinney’s loyalty is one of his best qualities as a coach and as a man, but is Vizzina best for Clemson? Is Denson?

Because he waited his turn, should not guarantee Vizzina the starting job. He should earn the job, and quite frankly, he has not done that yet.

Vizzina started just one game in the three years he has been at Clemson, and let’s be honest, he did not blow you away. He was serviceable, as any good backup quarterback should be, but is he the guy that is going to take Clemson back to the promise land?

Based on the one sample size we have seen, which was against a bad SMU defense, I say no.

Is Vizzina the guy to lead Clemson into Baton Rouge and beat LSU next year?

Is he the guy that can go on the road and outduel ACC Champion Darian Mensah and Duke?

Is he the guy that can take down Miami, who is playing for the national championship on Monday?

Right now, and I could be wrong, but my answer to all of those questions is “no.”

Clemson could still get a quarterback in the portal, but that is not likely to happen, which is disappointing. But again, maybe Vizzina or Denson will prove me wrong.
