Swinney: College Football has One Major Problem, but It Can Be Fixed

CLEMSON — Dabo Swinney did not just use Friday’s press conference to state his case on how Ole Miss tampered with former linebacker Luke Ferrelli.

The Clemson head coach also used the platform as an opportunity to express how college football needed to fix its calendar, which he says is the only way the game can fix the current state it is in.

“This whole state of affair really motivated me, really sparked me to put my thoughts on paper,” Swinney said Friday from the Smart Media Center.

Swinney, who does not get a vote in changing the calendar, said he does not want to be just a person who focuses on the problems, but he wants to help find opportunities for solutions, so situations like the one he and the Clemson football program had to endure last weekend, does not happen, again.

The Clemson coach spent the next 30 minutes talking about solutions on how to fix the current state of affair in college football.

“It is remarkably sad to see where we are, right now, in some of these areas in college football,” Swinney said. “To me, there are three big primary problems, and there is one primary cause.

“Three of the worst issues in our game right now are happening because of the same reason. It’s because our calendar is just stupid. I do not know how else to say it. It is just stupid.”

Swinney pointed out the calendar is why athletic directors are firing coaches in the middle of the season. He said the calendar is why coaches are jumping ship at the end of the season instead of staying with their team through the postseason and playoff runs.

He also pointed out that players are leaving their teams early and opting out the postseason because of the calendar. Swinney says the calendar is forcing players, with little to no experience in being an adult, to make quick decisions that will affect the rest of their lives.

“All three are major issues and all three are functions from one problem, so let’s fix the problem,” Swinney said.

The Clemson coach said if they are going to fix the calendar, the first thing that should be done is to do what is truly best for the player and what is best for the education of the player.

“What is best for these players. To me, it is to stay in school and complete another semester of academics, which also gives them more time to make a good and informed decision,” he said.

In his first year deeply invested and involved in the transfer portal, Swinney admitted how crazy that first week was and how eye opening it was for him.

“It was like meeting someone in the bar and then eight hours later going across the street and getting married in the Elvis Wedding Chapel,” he said. “It was crazy. It is the best analogy I can give you.”

Swinney went on for another 25 minutes or so before finally wrapping up and saying as adults, they should no better and do better for the 98 percent of college football players who will not play in the NFL.

“I think we have a responsibility to make sure we educate, equip and that we graduated the young men that have been entrusted into all of us in college football,” he said. “We should do what is right for the long-term version for these players and not what is best in the short term.”
