Smith’s Court Date Pushed Back

There has been a new development in Clemson WR Tristan Smith’s pursuit of another season of eligibility.

Smith announced on Sunday that his next court date has been pushed back from next month to June 8.

“I just wanted to take some time to thank everyone that is supporting me throughout this whole process,” Smith posted to X. “I know without the support, I probably wouldn’t even be here. My court date has been moved to June 8th. Even though that might seem a ways away, God never says oops. Go Tigers.”

Smith is suing the NCAA after a waiver seeking a fifth year was denied back in November. Smith played two seasons at the JUCO level before spending a year at the FCS level in 2024, and is seeking to be granted a fifth year based on those JUCO years. When he transferred to Clemson, he lost credits, which pushed his graduation date back a year. He needs that extra year to compete his degree.

Other players have been granted an extra year due to playing at the JUCO level, most notably Diego Pavia at Vanderbilt. One of Smith’s own teammates at Hutchinson Community College, Malik Brown, was granted an extra year.

Smith appeared in front of a Pickens County judge last week seeking an injunction that would allow him to participate in Clemson’s 2026 season while his eligibility case makes it way through the court, but the TRO was denied.

The 6-foot-5 wideout totaled 24 catches for 239 yards and a touchdown in his debut season with the Tigers.
