Clemson scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, as the ninth-ranked Tigers rallied to beat No. 5 Oregon, 6-5, Friday in their second game of the NFCA Leadoff Classic at the Eddie C. Moore Complex in Clearwater, Fla.
Clemson centerfielder Jamison Brockenbrough, who had a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning in the Tigers’ come-from-behind win over Southeastern Louisiana on Thursday, smacked a single to centerfield in the bottom of the sixth inning to plate Ava Wilson with the game-winning run.
The Tigers (2-0) also got a solo home run from Mac Pavese that started the rally with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Sierra Maness came in in the top of the seventh inning for Abby Dunning and earned her second save in as many games.
The Ducks (1-1) used Clemson errors in the first and fourth innings to plate for four of their five runs. Four of the Tigers’ five runs allowed were unearned. They also got a solo home run from Amari Harper in the third inning.
Corri Hicks had a three-run home run in the bottom of the second inning for Clemson, while Pavese added her solo shot in the sixth inning.
Dunning, who came on in relief for starter Lexie Hames with one out in the first inning, earned her second win of the young season. Hames walked three of the four batters she faced before being pulled by head coach John Rittman. Two of Oregon’s five runs were charged to her.
Dunning allowed three runs, but only one was earned. She gave up just four hits, struck out seven and walked three in 5 2/3 innings of work.
After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the first inning, Clemson rallied with a three-run second to take the lead. Hicks, one of the heroes from Thursday’s season-opening win over Southeastern Louisiana, recorded her second home run in as many games, when she launched a 1-1 offering from pitcher Elise Sokolsky to leftfield.
The home run was a three-run shot, that flew over the leftfield fence, giving the Tigers a 3-2 lead. The Oklahoma transfer scored Kennedy Ariail and Pavese. Kennedy was running for Macey Cintron, who drew a walk to start the inning, and Pavese followed with a single to right.
Hicks homered in the bottom of the eighth inning on Thursday to lift Clemson to a 5-3 victory over SE Louisiana.
Oregon rallied to tie the game in the third inning, and then regained the lead with a two-run fourth inning for a 5-3 lead. Harper homered to straightaway centerfield with one out in the third, while a Julia Knowler throwing error allowed the Ducks to plate their two runs in the fourth.
A throwing error by third baseman Marian Collins allowed Oregon to score two runs in the top of the first inning.
With one out in the bottom of the sixth inning, Pavese homered to centerfield to pull the Tigers within a run at 5-4.
It was fitting that the Tigers tied the game thanks to a fielding-error from Oregon leftfielder Elon Butler. The error came when Ava Wilson drilled a shot into left field with two outs, but Butler could not handle the ball which allowed Taylor Pipkins to score from second base to tie the game.
Wilson, who moved to second base on the Butler error, came home to score the winning run after Brockenbrough singled to center, giving Clemson a 7-6 lead at the time.
