The Clemson men’s basketball team is rolling, having won 12 of its last 13 games. The Tigers are 19-4 overall, 9-1 in ACC play, ranked No. 20 in the AP Top 25, and in sole possession of second place in the ACC standings behind Duke. Clemson is currently projected as a No. 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament, according to ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi.
The Tigers are coming off a 66-64 victory at Stanford on Wednesday night. Clemson has now won 13 consecutive ACC road games, dating back to last season – tied for the third longest such streak in ACC history (NC State from 1972-74).
So, why is Clemson so good this season, despite the fact that senior guard Dillon Hunter is the only non-freshman who returned from last season’s team?
ACC Network basketball analyst Terrence Oglesby, a guard for Clemson from 2007-09 and former Tiger assistant, broke down what makes Brad Brownell’s team so good.
Oglesby pointed to three things – “collective IQ,” “defensive attention to detail,” and “pick a guy, any guy.”
“This is a Clemson team, it doesn’t matter the night, it can be somebody different,” Oglesby said of Clemson’s depth and balance, instead of a single prolific scorer. “Seven guys on the team have led them in scoring in a different game this season. They share the basketball. They’re smart. They get it to the open guy, and they do a terrific job of just passing to the open guy.”
