Arkansas Slugs Its Way to Run-Rule Win over Clemson

The ninth-ranked Arkansas softball team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back en route to a 12-0, five-inning run-rule win over No. 18 Clemson on Friday night in Day 2 of the States Up! Invitational in San Marcos, Texas.

The Razorbacks sent three runners home right off the bat, taking a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a three-run home run by third baseman Ella McDowell.

That was all the runs the Razorbacks would need in the victory. Arkansas lefty Robyn Herron pitched a gem to pick up the win, as she tossed five scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and two walks while striking out 11.

Arkansas blew the game wide open with a nine-run frame in the bottom of the third, extending its lead to 12-0.

The inning featured an RBI single by Kennedy Miller, a run-scoring walk by Atalyia Rijo, an RBI single by Karlie Davison, a two-run single by Dakota Kennedy, an RBI groundout by Reagan Johnson and an RBI single by McDowell, before Tianna Bell capped off the inning with a two-run homer.

Clemson’s Abby Dunning suffered the loss in the circle. She pitched 2.1 innings, while allowing seven runs (all earned) on five hits. She had one strikeout and issued four walks.

Arkansas improved to 6-1 on the young season, while Clemson dropped to 4-4. The Razorbacks finished the contest with their 12 runs on nine hits, while holding the Tigers to just one hit.
