Sharman, Savoie Pace Clemson to Walk-Off Run-Rule Win

CLEMSON — Michael Sharman was dominant in his Clemson debut, striking out eight across six shutout innings as No. 19 Clemson took down Army 10-0 in a run-rule win. The win clinches the weekend series for Clemson.

Sharman, who transferred in from Tennessee, was phenomenal in his first start of the season, holding the Black Knights scoreless while only allowing one base hit. He also did not walk a batter in picking up his first win of the season.

Hayden Simmerson, another transfer, came on to pitch the final two innings, striking out the final four hitters he faced.

The Tigers (2-0) pounded out 16 hits and scored at least one run in five of the first six innings. Nate Savoie led the charge, finishing 3-for-4 with four RBI. He has driven in five runs over the first two games. Tryston McCladdie also went 3-for-4, and his solo shot to lead off the eighth ended the contest. He also scored two runs.

Luke Gaffney had a 3-for-3 day at the plate, while Bryce Clavon went 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Savoie kicked the scoring off with an RBI single in the bottom of the first, giving the Tigers the early 1-0 lead. Clemson tacked on two more in the second, with both Bryce Clavon and Jarren Purify driving in runs.

In the third, Savoie went deep, a solo shot out to right-center. It was the first home run of his Clemson career. Later in the inning, Jack Crighton drove in a run with a double down the left-field line, extending the lead to 5-0.

Savoie added to his RBI total in the fourth, driving in his third run of the day on a fielder’s choice. Later in the inning, Ty Dalley made it 7-0 on an RBI single into right.

Clavon went yard to start the bottom of the sixth, his first in a Clemson uniform. Savoie then drove in his fourth run of the game later in the frame with an RBI single to make it 9-0.
