After getting off to a slow start in the the States Up! Invitational in San Marcos, Texas, No. 18 Clemson rallied for a 9-3 win over Wichita State Sunday in the final day to go 2-2 in the tournament.
The Tigers (6-4) shut out BYU, 7-0, on Friday night after dropping the first two game of the tournament on Thursday and Friday afternoon to host Texas State and then No. 9 Arkansas.
But, like it has in eight of its 10 games this season, Clemson trailed the Shockers after the first inning after giving up three runs. Led by Mac Pavese’s 2 hits and 4 RBIs, the Tigers rallied to first tie the game with one run in the bottom of the first inning, two runs in the second, and then six runs in the fifth.
Sierra Maness earned the win in the circle for the Tigers. After allowing the three runs in the first inning, she settled down and went the distance for the first time this season. She allowed five hits and struck out two batters.
Corri Hicks went 2-for-2 at the plate, scored and drove in a run, while Riley Fennell, Taylor Pipkins, Kyle Channell, Marian Collins and Kylee Johnson all drove in runs. The Tigers finished the game with 10 hits overall, their best offensive game of the early season thus far.
After scoring one run in the bottom of the first inning, Pavese tied things up with a two-run single with one out in the bottom of the second. Clemson took the lead for good in the fifth inning, after Channell, Hick and Johnson recorded back-to-back-to-back RBI hits.
Up 6-3, Pavese jumped on a pitch with two outs and drove in two more runs, while Knowler singled to the left side of the infield to plate Jamison Brockenbrough for the game’s final run.
