Clemson Keeps Rolling to Start Season

CLEMSON — Clemson got a grand slam from Jacob Jarrell in the bottom of the first inning, Tryston McCladdie smacked a two-run shot in the third and Nate Savoie added a solo home run in the sixth, as the 15th-ranked Tigers rolled to an 11-1 victory over Charlotte Tuesday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

The win improved Clemson to 4-0 in the young season, while the 49ers dropped to 1-3.

Clemson lead-off hitter Jarren Purify drew three walks and scored all three times, while Savoie scored three times as well in the run-rule victory.

“That is a good victory. I thought we played well in all three phases,” Clemson head coach Erik Bakich said. “That is a good hitting club. They have threats in their lineup up and down. We threw a lot of different arms tonight, and, outside of that home run, we were able to minimize the offensive opportunities over there.”

In the first inning, the Tigers got a sacrifice fly from Ty Dalley and then Jarrell sent Chase Carson’s 1-2 cutter to left centerfield for a grand slam and a 5-0 lead. Jarrell’s round tripper was Clemson’s lone hit of the inning, as they loaded the bases twice on three walks and an error.

Jarrell’s grand slam came with two outs, the first four of eight RBIs with two outs.

“We do scouting with all the coaches and they give me pretty much all the pitches and all the things I needed to know out there,” Jarrell said. “Basically, I kind of knew what was coming a little bit. I was kind of expecting that (cutter), but the scouting here is phenomenal.”

Clemson extended its lead to 8-0 after two innings. Luke Gaffney’s one-out double down the third baseline scored Jarren Purify for a 6-0 advantage, while Jack Crighton singled to left field with two outs to score two more runs.

Crighton’s hit scored Savoie and Gaffney for an 8-0 lead.

McCladdie homered to left field with two outs in the bottom of the third inning, extending the Tigers’ lead to 10-0.

GREAT FIRST START

Freshman pitcher Eston Simpson made his first start on Tuesday and what a start it was. In his four scoreless innings of work, he allowed just two hits and walked two. He threw 50 pitches overall and had one strikeout in his first career victory on the mound.

In the first inning, he threw six pitches as he sat the Charlotte batters down in order.

“Coach always talks about owning our preparation, so even if you have good stuff or bad stuff, you know at the end of the day your preparation is good,” Simpson said. “I have full faith in (my preparation).”

GREAT PITCHING, AGAIN

Simpson was not the only pitcher getting it done on Tuesday. Nathan Dvorsky, Brendon Bennett and Landon Fowler combined to finish the game. They gave up just one run, a solo home run by Charlotte’s Spencer Nolan in the seventh inning. The home run ended the Tigers’ streak of 25 straight scoreless innings pitched.

Clemson shut out Army 10-0 and 7-0 on Saturday.

HOT START CONTINUES

Savoie, in his first season at Clemson after transferring from Loyola Marymount, is hitting .733 with two homers, two doubles, 8 RBIs, 6 runs and a 1.091 slugging percentage in the Tigers’ four games.

In his first three games as a Tiger against Army West last weekend, he was 8-for-11 with a homer, double and seven RBIs. The sophomore catcher/outfielder finished Tuesday afternoon 3-for-4 with a double and a home run against the 49ers.

Savoie’s solo home run to lead off the Clemson sixth-inning gave the Tigers their 11th run of the afternoon and conclude the scoring for the Tigers.

INJURIES

Clemson shortstop Tyler Lichtenberger took a hard fall when he dove for a Nolan hit, which tried to get through the left side of the infield in the fifth inning. Unfortunately for Clemson, Lichtenberger landed on his left shoulder, which appeared to bother the transfer.

He left the game in the sixth inning and was replaced by Purify at shortstop, who was playing second place.

“He is fine. He did not want to come out, but Jay Dillard has been patient and we wanted to get him in, so he was going to go in anyways,” Bakich said.

The Clemson coach was not sure what Lichtenberger’s injury was, however, he thinks, “he just landed on it funny.”
