CLEMSON — Jacob Jarrell hit his fourth long ball of the season and Michael Sharman delivered another quality start as the No. 19 Tigers beat Bryant 5-3 on Saturday in Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The win clinches the weekend series for Clemson.
Sharman had another impressive start in picking up his second win (2-0), allowing one run on two hits while striking out five across five innings of work. Freshman Danny Nelson pitched the final 1.2 innings to notch the first save of his young career.
Jarren Purify was once again fantastic in the leadoff spot, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two stolen bases. Luke Gaffney and Jarrell both drove in two runs in the win.
The Tigers wasted no time in getting on the board. Purify led off the bottom of the first with a single. After a Tryston McCladdie flyout, Nate Savoie singled, putting runners at first and second. After a double steal, Luke Gaffney singled through the right side, driving in both runners and giving Clemson a 2-0 lead.
Jacob Jarrell hit a two-run moonshot out to left in the bottom of the third, extending the lead to 4-0. It was his team-leading fourth homer of the young season.
The Bulldogs pushed across their first earned run of the series in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by Charlie Saul.
Ty Dalley ripped a two-out single into left in the bottom half of the inning, driving in a run and making it 5-1. It was Dalley’s second hit of the day.
After the Bulldogs got back-to-back hits off Hayden Simmerson to begin the eighth, Gavin Greger would drive in a run on a fielder’s choice to third. After Nelson came in to relieve Simmerson, Ellis Garcia hit his first pitch off the wall in right. The RBI triple made it 5-3. Nelson then got the next two hitters, stranding Garcia at third, before working a perfect ninth to end it.
Pounding the Zone
Sharman had another efficient outing, walking just one hitter. His strike rate was right at 70%. Pound the zone and let the defense work behind you.
Dalley Heating Up
After experiencing a slow start against Army, Dalleyis starting to get it going at the plate. He had one hit in Friday’s win, plus two others that were hit on the button. In this one, the right-fielder went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
