Clemson Dispatches of PC, Extends Winning Streak

CLEMSON — Jarren Purify and Tryston McCladdie both drove in two runs for Clemson as the No. 15 Tigers dispatched of Presbyterian 6-2 in midweek action on Tuesday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Erik Bakich’s team has now won eight straight to start the season.

Purify went 2-for-3 with a double and also scored a run. McCladdie finished 2-for-4, while Nate Savoie and Jason Fultz Jr each had run-scoring hits.

Freshman Dylan Harrison went three scoreless in his first career start for Clemson (8-0), allowing just one hit, while striking out one and walking one. Fellow freshman Eston Simpson pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Harrison, allowing one hit, while striking out two.

Peyton Miller, another freshman pitcher on the Tigers’ roster, tossed a scoreless seventh, working around a one-out single. Redshirt freshman Brendon Bennett pitched the eighth, allowing a run on two hits. He struck out one and walked one.

Jack Crighton drew a leadoff walk to start the bottom of the second and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Fultz then singled back up the middle, driving in Crighton and giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead. It was Fultz’s second RBI of the season.

Tyler Lichtenberger and Bryce Clavon then both walked, loading the bases for Purify, who then drew a four-pitch walk, making it 2-0. McCladdie followed with a two-run single passed a drawn-in infield, giving the Tigers a 4-0 advantage.

Purify and Savoie both had RBI singles in the bottom of the fourth, pushing the lead to 6-0.

PC (2-7) finally got on the board in the seventh on an RBI single from Amman Dewberry.

The Blue Hose added a second run in the top of the ninth. Noah Samol allowed a leadoff double to start the inning, then a fielding error by Luke Gaffeny put runners at the corners. A sac fly then made it 6-2. Samol struck out the next two hitters to end it.

Ariston Veasey made his Clemson debut, striking out two in a scoreless inning of relief. The Alabama transfer missed the first two weekends following an offseason arrest. Those charges have now been dropped. The hard-throwing right-hander could potentially play a key role in the Tigers’ bullpen if he has the type of command that was on display Tuesday.
