Spring Practice: Day 2 Defensive Observations

CLEMSON — Clemson held its second day of spring drills at the practice fields behind the Allen Reeves Football Complex. The media was allowed to watch the first five periods of Friday’s practice.

Here is what we saw.

–The most interesting thing to watch on Friday was a new drill in which the defensive backs and the cornerbacks worked together in what would seem like their version of an “Oklahoma Drill” without the hitting, of course. It was a cone drill in which the wide receiver runs one direction with one corner, while the other defensive back runs the other way, but the cones lead him back to the receiver after the receiver catches a short pass from the quarterbacks.

–During that drill we saw transfer corner Elliott Washington going up against wide receiver Bryant Wesco, Jr. It was hard to tell who won the battle in the drill.

–We also saw Washington during a zone drill the Tigers were running. Of course, Tom Allen was working his linebackers and defensive backs in that drill. He was using the speakers the whole time to keep them in line.

–Freshman cornerback Shavar Young, Jr., came up a little gimpy after returning a punt in the first couple of drills on Friday. He was trying to walk it off, but he looked uncomfortable.

–Speaking of the DBs, Corey Myrick, a transfer, looked smooth in his drills.

–Safety Ronan Hanafin looked really good in his drills today. However, he dropped an interception just as we were walking off the field.

–The transfers safeties seemed really comfortable in what Thomas Allen, Jr., was asking them to do. You could tell the veteran experience was showing at times during the DB drills.

–Anderson University head coach Bobby Lamb was in attendance at practice, as well as a couple of other college and high school coaches.

Clemson will continue practice on Saturday morning at Memorial Stadium.
