Spring Practice: Day 2 Offensive Observations

CLEMSON — Clemson held its second day of spring drills at the practice fields behind the Allen Reeves Complex. The media was allowed to watch the first five periods of Friday’s practice.

Here is what we saw.

–You could tell there was more of a sense of urgency on the offensive side of the ball with Chad Morris running the show. Morris was out there coaching everyone, whether it was the quarterbacks, the left guard or a wide receiver. He was definitely making his presence known and seemed to be coaching guys up.

–Tajh Boyd was definitely coaching up the quarterbacks. He is, of course, working exclusively with them, but you can tell he has a personnel relationship with them all.

–Of course, the team was in shorts on Friday, so it was easy to notice freshman quarterback Tait Reynolds was wearing a full sleeve on his right leg.

–Speaking of Reynolds, he definitely looks the part of a college quarterback from a physical standpoint. He is listed at 6-foot-2, 215 pounds and he looks like it.

–In terms of being physically ready, quarterback Chris Denson has made obvious strides. He is listed at 6-foot-2, 195 pounds. But it is obvious, Denson is over 200 pounds and it probably approaching the 210 range.

–As for throwing the football, Denson looked good on the deep throws down the sideline, as he threw a couple of dimes, including a nice over-the-shoulder throw to Tyler Brown. However, he did not look good on the intermediate throws, as he threw one 10-yard slant into the dirt.

–Christopher Vizzina did not do anything that overwhelmed me or stood out over the others, but he was consistent and that says a lot. He threw some good balls down the sideline and was definitely the most accurate of the bunch from the drills we got to see.

–Wide receiver Tristan Smith, who is currently suing the NCAA in hopes of getting another year of eligibility, was practicing on Friday. He also has bulked up.

–Former Clemson WR Jacoby Ford was helping coach Lonnie Galloway with the wide receivers. Ford, who has been a high school football coach the last eight years, has replaced Drew Swinney on Dabo Swinney’s staff. Drew Swinney is now coaching the wide receivers at Samford in Birmingham, Ala. Tyler Grisham is still the on field coach for the wide receivers.

–Wide receiver T.J. Moore was still in a yellow jersey, as was Cole Turner. They were on the side field running and stretching while the media was allowed to watch.

–Bryant Wesco, Jr., was in green, as expected, and was doing all the drills today. He looked smooth in the one cone drill where the defensive backs and wide receivers participated together.

–Wide receiver Tyler Brown was catching punts, along with Misun “Tink” Kelley and freshman corner Shavar Young, Jr.

Clemson will practice again on Saturday morning at Memorial Stadium.
