CLEMSON — A fellow South Carolina program made the four-hour trip from the coast to the foothills Wednesday night as No. 25 Clemson hosted the College of Charleston for the first matchup between the two schools in program history.
Coming off a loss to No. 11 Mississippi State during the Tiger Invitational last Sunday, Clemson quickly bounced back by adding a win to the left side of the record, as the Tigers posted a 7-0 shutout at McWhorter Stadium.
Mac Pavese showed again why she was named the ACC Freshman of the Week, launching a 243-foot bomb over the right field wall in the fifth inning and having a combined three RBIs batted in. Marian Collins also led the Tigers on the offense side, finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Jamison Brockenbrough reached base multiple times, drawing two walks, crossing home plate twice and adding an RBI of her own. In the circle, right-hander Abby Dunning made her fifth start of the season, pitching two innings while allowing just one hit.
ACC Pitcher of the Week Sierra Maness took over in the third inning and delivered another strong performance. Maness allowed no runs and only one hit with three strikeouts against 10 batters faced.
To close out the game, Keira Krosby and Lexie Hames each pitched one inning to maintain the shutout.
Charleston starter Jules Raymond surrendered two hits and three runs across three innings before being pulled.
The Cougars (8-13) turned to Ryley Cutter in relief during the fourth inning. Cutter finished the game giving up six hits and four runs.
Clemson (14-7) jumped ahead early, putting three runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning. After drawing a walk and stealing two bases, Jamison Brockenbrough crossed home plate on a fielder’s choice to give the Tigers the early lead.
With no outs later in the inning, Collins ripped an RBI double into the right-centerfield gap to extend the advantage. Collins later came around to score on a fielder’s choice, giving Clemson a 3-0 lead after one inning.
The Tigers maintained control through the middle innings before adding to their lead in the fourth.
Pavese sparked the inning with a line-drive single into left field. A single from Collins and a walk from Brockenbrough loaded the bases, allowing Cintron to bring in another run, pushing Clemson’s lead to 4-0.
Collins once again proved why she remains one of the Tigers’ most reliable hitters, continuing to produce in key situations throughout the game. In the bottom of the fifth, Brockenbrough batted one in on a hard-hit ground ball, extending Clemson’s lead.
Moments later, Mac Pavese delivered the biggest swing of the inning, launching a 243-foot two-run home run that pushed the Tigers’ lead to 7–0.
PATIENCE AT THE PLATE
The Tigers showed a lot of patience at the plate against College of Charleston pitching. Clemson drew nine walks in the game, tying a season high in drawn walks.
