Clemson Knows Possible Opponents for ACC Tournament

CLEMSON — Clemson, the No. 5 seed in next week’s ACC Tournament, found out who it might play in the second round of the ACC Tournament next Wednesday. The ACC released its official bracket on Saturday night once the tournament field was set.

The Tigers will play the winner of the Virginia Tech-Wake Forest game on Wednesday at 9:30 p.m., in the second round. The Hokies, the No. 12 seed, will play Wake Forest, the No. 13 seed, at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in the first round of the tournament.

Clemson (22-9, 12-6 ACC) earned the league’s No. 5 seed after tying with North Carolina for fourth place in the ACC standings. The Tar Heels, however, claimed the No. 4 seed by virtue of their win over the Tigers last Tuesday night.

The Tigers closed out the regular season on Saturday with a 79-76 victory over Georgia Tech at Littlejohn Coliseum to clinch the No. 5 seed. They are familiar with both Virginia Tech and Wake Forest after playing both last month.

The Hokies (19-12, 8-10 ACC) beat Clemson at home, 76-66, on Feb. 11, which snapped the Tigers’ four-game winning streak at the time and after they returned from spending a week in California. Clemson had just taken down Stanford and Cal on its West Coast trip.

The loss to Virginia Tech was the first of four straight defeats by the Tigers.

The Demon Deacons (16-15, 7-11 ACC) were one of those losses, too. They beat Clemson 85-77 in Greensboro, N.C., on Feb. 18.

Clemson, of course, has never won the Men’s ACC Basketball Tournament. The Tigers are the only charter member of the conference to not win an ACC Tournament Championship.

The first year of competition in the league was the 1953-’54 basketball season. Clemson has advanced to the ACC Championship Game just twice in its history — 1962 and 2008. It lost in both cases.

The Wednesday winners then will move on to play the tournament’s top four seeds on Thursday in the quarterfinals, with No. 2 seed Virginia taking the court at noon ET and No. 3 seed Miami following at 2:30 p.m. ET. The evening session features No. 1 seed Duke at 7 p.m. ET and No. 4 seed North Carolina at 9:30 p.m. ET.

All 14 tournament games will be nationally televised on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU or ACC Network. In addition, all games will be available for streaming via ACCNX.
