Newly Offered Edge Says Clemson ‘Checks All Boxes’

Clemson defensive ends coach Chris Rumph told Kalib Spivey he had some good news to share with him once he arrived for the Elite Retreat last weekend.

The three-star edge rusher, out of Carver, Alabama, made his first trip to campus since last spring, and Rumph did indeed deliver on his promise as Spivey left the event with an offer from the Tigers in hand.

“I kind of got the hint from Coach Rumph,” Spivey told The Clemson Insider. “He said, ‘I got good news for you when you get here.’ Honestly, I just went because I wanted to visit Clemson again. Because I really like Clemson.”

Outside of landing the offer, one of Spivey’s biggest takeaways was Dabo Swinney’s speech, which went about three hours this year. The 6-foot-2, 245-pound prospect also got to spend some one-on-one time with the head coach.

“He talked about the process and why we should pick Clemson,” Spivey added. “How Clemson has been good for so long. He was talking about how all the edge rushers he’s had from Alabama have always turned out good. It was just nice to hear what he had to say.”

It was a visit that made an impression, making Clemson a legitimate contender in Spivey’s recruitment.

“Definitely top five in my recruitment,” he said. “They check all the boxes. I had a meeting with Coach Rumph, and he just showed me the development standpoint. How the things you do in practice translate to the game. I was just watching that, and I was really impressed.”

Spivey currently holds more than 20 offers, including Auburn, Florida State, Colorado, Georgia, LSU and Miami.

While he won’t be able to make it in for Clemson’s big official weekend, the Tigers will get one of his officials. Spivey plans to come in at a later date, June 12-14. He will be at Duke during Clemson’s big weekend, May 29-31. Auburn is also set to get one, June 12-14.

After that, Spivey plans to sit down and make a decision, probably at some point in early July.

“I just want to go somewhere I can see myself being developed as a man and a player,” Spivey said. “I want to get a good education too.”
