Clemson head coach Brad Brownell gave an update on forward Carter Welling, who was injured with 1:59 remaining in the first half of the Tigers’ 71-62 victory over Wake Forest Wednesday in the second round of the ACC Tournament at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C.
Welling was driving the basketball to his right, when his right knee gave out and sent him tumbling to the ground in pain. Replays showed that his right knee buckled as he attempted to go up for the basket.
The 6-foot-11 junior from Utah was carried off the court and reappeared later near the end of the game wearing a knee brace on his right leg while using crutches to walk.
“Obviously, they are going to do MRIs and all of those things,” Brownell said. “I find it unlikely he will play tomorrow, but I have not been told anything definitive. Obviously, it is disappointing because I thought we were playing really well tonight and would love to be at full strength and that is part of it.
“Obviously, we will try to find a way to combat that, but it is hard to do the platoon system when you only have nine (players), so we are not going to play North Carolina five-on-four. We are not that arrogant.”

Before his injury, Welling scored five points in 12 minutes, making two of his four shots, while pulling down four rebounds. The 240-pound junior is second on the team with 10.4 points per game and leads the team with 5.5 rebounds per game.
Welling connected on a big three-pointer in the corner that gave the Tigers a 27-16 lead with 7:50 to play in the first half.
The Tigers (23-9) will play North Carolina in the quarterfinals on Thursday with tip set for 9:30 p.m.
