Swinney Provides Update On Injured Wide Receiver

After the first scrimmage of the spring on Wednesday, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney confirmed that wide receiver Tristan Smith is out with an injury.

As previously reported by The Clemson Insider, Smith was injured in practice last week, suffering a high ankle sprain.

“He had to have tightrope surgery,” the head coach said. “He has already had it.”

Smith is in the process of trying to get an extra year of eligibility. He spent the first two years of his career playing at the JUCO level before moving to FBS school, Southeast Missouri State. He then transferred to Clemson for the 2024 season.

Smith’s waiver for an extra year was denied by the NCAA late last year, but he has since filed suit in Pickens County, and his case is scheduled to be heard in June. Until then, he is allowed to take part in all team activities.

Obviously, Smith will be out for the rest of the spring, but if he were to win another season of eligibility, he should be ready to go by the time fall camp rolls around.

“It is a pretty common procedure,” Swinney added. “He will be ready to roll.”
