CLEMSON — Clemson took out two games of offensive frustration on No. 4 Georgia Tech in two innings on Saturday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
The eighth-ranked Tigers plated eight runs in the fifth inning and then three more in the bottom of the sixth inning in a 13-7 rout of the Yellow Jackets. It was quite the contrast from the previous two games in which Tech run-ruled the Tigers in Game 1 and won 9-3 in Game 2.
But Clemson’s offensive explosion in the fifth and sixth innings, allowed the Tigers to avoid being swept by the Yellow Jackets in the weekend series. Tryston McCladdie tied a Clemson record with three doubles in one game, as he 4-for-6 at the plate and drove in two runs.
Jack Crighton and Ty Dalley had three hits each, while Dalley and Jacob Jarrell each had 3 RBIs. Crighton was also credited with 2 RBIs in the win. Clemson finished the game with 14 hits after having just 11 hits combined in the first two games of the series.
Clemson (16-4, 1-2 ACC) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first thanks to a Jarrell force to third base that scored Purify and an a two-out RBI single from Crighton.
Tech (17-3, 4-2 ACC) added solo home runs from Will Baker in the second inning and Ryan Zuckerman in the fifth inning to tie the game at two. Later in the fifth inning, the Jackets continued to use the long ball, as Carson Kerce sent a bomb to left field for a three-run home run and 5-2 lead.
Georgia Tech’s long balls overshadowed Drew Titsworth outing, as the Clemson starter kept them at-bay for the three innings he worked. He allowed just one run on three hits during his time on the mound.
However, Talen Bell came on in the fourth inning and allowed three runs on four hits in his one inning of work before Dion Brown gave up the three-run bomb to Kerce in the fifth inning.
Clemson rallied in the bottom of the fifth inning, when Jarrell went deep to left centerfield for a two-run shot and Crighton doubled over the head of the right fielder to score Luke Gaffney from second base to tie the score at 5.
The Tigers loaded the bases after Crighton’s double and then took the lead on a passed ball from pitcher Caden Spivey. Dalley singled to right to score two more runs for an 8-5 lead and McCladdie doubled to right center to drive in two more runs to make it a 10-5 score.
When all was said-and-done, 11 batters came to the plate, four got hits, four drew walks and two were hit by pitch. Clemson’s eight runs tied for the most in a single-game this year, while Tech used five different pitchers.
The Tigers added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for good measure. Dalley, Purify and Savoie were all credited with RBIs.
