After suffering a torn ACL in last week’s ACC Tournament, all Carter Welling could do was watch from the sideline as Clemson lost to Iowa 67-61 in the South Regional of the NCAA Tournament at Benchmark International Arena in Tampa on Friday.
Welling’s absence was certainly felt, as the Hawkeyes won the battle on the boards 36-24, while also winning on the offensive glass 13-8. The 6-foot-11 big man was the Tigers’ leading rebounder this year.
With the season now over, Welling can turn his attention toward his recovery, as his surgery is scheduled for next week.
“Obviously, there is still some swelling in there,” Welling said after the Tigers’ first-round loss. “The surgery is scheduled for Thursday, and I am looking forward to getting that under my belt so I can get started on recovery and back to playing.”
Until the doctors get a look at the extent of the injury, Welling isn’t sure of a timeline regarding his return.
“I think a lot of that depends on what they find as they get into the knee,” Welling added. “So, there isn’t an exact timeline.”
What he can do in the meantime is serve as one of the team’s vocal leaders heading into the offseason. With players like RJ Godfrey, Nick Davidson and Dillon Hunter having played their final collegiate games, Welling will be looked upon for leadership over the offseason.
With one final season of eligibility ahead of him, Welling is also determined to attack his rehab as hard as he possibly can.
“I think just being able to use my voice,” Welling said. “I think that is a great way I can still help out and show up every day. Just work hard as I can every day with rehab and let the guys know I am still here for them.”
