CLEMSON — With basketball season over and baseball off to a bad start in the ACC, it is only fitting that spring football is back in Clemson.
After taking the last 10 days off, the Tigers were back on the practice fields Sunday, as they begin their final practices in advance of next Saturday’s Orange & White Spring Game at Memorial Stadium.
When we last saw the football team, Clemson held its first scrimmage of the spring, which did not go too well for the offense. The offense, of course, is still getting used to Chad Morris’ style of coaching, as well as his system.
The quarterback race is the talk of practice thus far, as Christopher Vizzina and Chris Denson are currently battling it out for the top spot. However, the last time we checked in, neither quarterback did well in the scrimmage.
“They were all just okay. Nobody was great,” Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said after the scrimmage on March 11. “Again, you can only do your part. When you play quarterback, you can only do your part. You can’t do it by yourself.
“You can’t play left guard. You can’t play left tackle. You can’t run the right route. You can’t catch the ball. But there are a lot of things you can do that I do not think they did a good job with, so nobody was good enough today, offensively. It was really average.”
As the Tigers wrap up spring drills this week, Swinney would like to see someone take charge at quarterback.
“They are all pushing. Everybody is pushing,” he said. “They are competing every day. There is not going to be a situation where we do not allow these guys to compete for a while. They are going to compete.
“We do not play until September. So, we are going to allow them all to keep competing.”
Of course, freshmen quarterbacks Tait Reynolds and Brock Bradley, along with graduate Trent Pearman are battling Vizzina and Denson for the starting job as well.
