Sunday was a whole lot better day for No. 25 Clemson than it was on Saturday.
The Tigers got a two-run single from Marian Collins and RBI hits from Macey Cintron and Mac Pavese, plus a clutch performance from pitcher Sierra Maness in the circle, as they won the rubber match against Notre Dame, 4-1, at Melissa Cook Stadium in South Bend, Ind. Coupled with Friday’s victory in Game 1, the Tigers won the three-game series, 2-1.
Cintron led the Clemson (22-10, 6-3 ACC) at the plate with a 2-for-3 afternoon that included a drawn walk. The sophomore continues to improve after starting the year slow. Pavese was 2-for-4, which included her run scoring hit to centerfield in the top of the seven inning that gave the Tigers an insurance run.
The Tigers also got hits from Julia Knowler and Sarah Breaux, while Jamison Brockenbrough and Cintron had the team’s only extra base hits, both were doubles.
In the circle, Maness had one of her better performances of the season. The transfer from USC Upstate pitched a complete game, as she allowed the one run on three hits, while walking just one batter. She also had three strikeouts.
The Irish (13-18, 3-6 ACC) had no answer for Maness. They were just 1-for-8 with runners on base and 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
Maness retired the last 13 batters she faced, including a diving catch by Kylee Johnson in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Clemson took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Cintron singled up the middle to score Brockenbrough, who led off the game with a walk. The senior centerfielder scored from second after taking the base following Kiley Channell’s grounder to second.
The Tigers added to their lead in the third. With one out and the bases loaded, Collins drove a ball to centerfield, scoring Pavese and Channell for a 3-0 advantage.
Notre Dame cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom part of the third, as Hayden Kyne also singled up the middle with two outs, scoring Ava Zachary from second base.
But the Tigers got their insurance run in the seventh inning to seal the victory. Brockenbrough led things off with a double down the rightfield line and later scored with one out when Pavese singled to right centerfield.
