Purify Set to Miss Extended Time

CLEMSON — Clemson suffered a huge loss during while getting swept at Notre Dame over the weekend.

Junior Jarren Purify was hit by a pitch late in Saturday’s defeat and was forced to exit the contest. The second basemen has not played since, and Erik Bakich provided an update after the Tigers’ 11-9 loss to Coastal Carolina on Tuesday.

“He’s got a fracture on the pinky side of his hand,” the head coach said. “Took a fastball on a hit by pitch.”

If there is any good news to come out of the situation, it’s that Purify won’t require any surgery on the injured right hand.

“The good news of a bad situation is it is not displaced, it doesn’t require surgery, the bone just needs to heal,” Bakich added. “It will be splinted or casted.”

Purify has been a constant in the lineup since his arrival at Clemson. This season, he’s served as the leadoff hitter all season and was batting .333 with two home runs and 13 RBI. His OBP was .450 and he was 10-of-14 on stolen base attempts before the injury.

While Bakich is hoping he might be able to begin doing some pinch running in the next two weeks, it sounds like it will be at least a month before he’s back in the lineup.

However, with the Tigers mired in a four-game losing streak and struggling to come up with timely hits, Purify’s loss is a big one.

“We are all sprinkling the wish dust on a quick healing process for him,” Bakich said. “He will probably be back out in a couple of weeks pinch running, and hopefully a couple of weeks after that he will be back in the lineup playing.”
