Historic Night for Clemson Lax

CLEMSON– As the sun shined over Lake Hartwell just behind Conklin Field, No. 11 Clemson and one special freshman found themselves on the verge of another historic moment in program history.

In a 21–5 win over Davidson College on Tuesday, the Tigers extended their win streak to a program record seven games, while also securing their 25th home victory in history. The matchup marked the third meeting between the two programs in as many years, with Clemson (10-4, 4-3 ACC) maintaining an undefeated record against Davidson (9-3, 3-2 A-10).

The night also became a milestone not just for the team but for individuals as well, especially freshman Alexa Spallina.

Spallina set two records in the first half of play. Early in the first quarter, she recorded her 44th assist of the season, breaking both the Clemson single-season and freshman assist records.

By halftime, she had already tallied five assists and added to her performance by becoming Clemson’s single-season points record holder with her 29th goal late in the second quarter.

Spallina finished the day with three goals and ten assists.

Ten different Tigers scored and five different Tigers scored at least two goals today. Regan Byrne also had a strong game scoring four goals and surpassing 80 career goals before the half. Brooke Goldstein had herself a day as well, finishing with five goals.

Clemson wasted no time getting on the board, scoring twice in just over two minutes to take early control in the first quarter.

After adding another goal, Davidson cut the lead to 3-1 with 8:11 remaining in the first. Following six scoreless minutes, Natalie Shurtleff scored to extend Clemson’s lead to 4-1.

Byrne added her second goal of the game, her 21st of the season, to push the lead to four. Davidson responded shortly after, cutting the lead to three.

With 8:44 left in the second quarter, Goldstein scored her 20th goal of the season to make it 7-2. Byrne and Shurtleff each added another goal, stretching the lead even further.

Spallina finished off the half with back-to-back goals, helping Clemson take an 11-2 lead into halftime.

Davidson scored first in the third quarter, but Clemson quickly answered with a Kayla MacLeod and Goldstein goal.

Both teams add a score to their column, making the score 14-4 with 2:05 to go in the third quarter.

Goldstein added her fifth goal of the game to start the last quarter of play, putting the Tigers up 16-4. Freshman Teagan Scott added her second goal of the season and increased the Tigers’ lead by 14.
