Former NFL GM ‘Pounding the Table’ for Woods

Former NFL general manager and executive Mike Tannenbaum, now an ESPN analyst, revealed 14 prospects that he’s “pounding the table for” leading up to the 2026 NFL Draft, which is set to take place from April 23-25 in Pittsburgh.

“With less than a month until the 2026 NFL draft, teams are working on their prospect boards,” Tannenbaum wrote. “It’s tough for each of them to come to a consensus because there are always a lot of opinions across front offices, coaching staffs and scouting departments. Everyone has their guys — the players they’re standing on the table for and arguing must be in the team’s plans. …

“With all that in mind, I decided to do a similar exercise, going back to my GM roots and picking out my guys for this 2026 class.”

Tannenbaum has more than two decades of experience in team front offices, including his time as executive vice president of football operations for the Miami Dolphins (2015-18) and executive vice president and general manager for the New York Jets (2006-12).

Tannenbaum’s “must-draft board” for 2026 includes one Clemson draft prospect – defensive tackle Peter Woods.

Tannenbaum highlighted Woods as one of the players he’d be targeting in Round 2, if he doesn’t get taken in the first round.

“There is a definite chance that Woods goes in Round 1,” Tannenbaum wrote. “He was getting early-pick buzz last summer, but a lack of big-time production (only 33 tackles and two sacks last season) caused a lot of evaluators to cool on him. If there’s any shot I can get him in Round 2, I’m making it happen. Woods has explosive traits and could make a real difference on the interior. He might be a little undersized at 6-foot-3 and 298 pounds (with sub-32-inch arms), but I’m banking on the potential, upside and value on Day 2. Now, I’m just crossing my fingers that he’s still there.”

Despite the drop in production on paper in 2025, Woods was still a first-team All-ACC selection by the league, the AP and Phil Steele, as well as a second-team All-American, per the AP, Steele and USA Today. He was also a freshman All-American in 2023.

In his three-year career as a Tiger from 2023-25, Woods was credited with 99 tackles (14.5 for loss), five sacks, two forced fumbles and two pass breakups over 35 games, including 24 starts.

Longtime ESPN NFL Draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. recently discussed Woods as being a potential 2026 NFL Draft “steal.” Kiper pointed out that before the 2025 season, Woods was bandied about as a possible “top-five pick overall,” and now, he’s being viewed as a “late-first, early-to-mid second round” selection.

Kiper’s updated NFL Draft Big Board rankings slot Woods as the No. 1 defensive tackle in this year’s draft class and the No. 19 overall prospect, regardless of position.

“Woods wasn’t elite in 2025, but the skill set is exactly what NFL teams covet,” Kiper wrote. “In the pros, Woods would fit nicely at 3-technique, though he has the versatility to move around on a defensive front. He plays on the inside the majority of the time, but he also can be disruptive off the edge. His strength will intrigue a lot of NFL teams no matter where he lines up.”
