Clemson Basketball Loses 2 More Coaches

CLEMSON — Not even a week since Brad Brownell filled two assistant roles on his coaching staff, he is back at work trying to find two more.

The Clemson Insider has confirmed that long time Brownell assistant Lucas McKay, as well as assistant coach Sean Dixon are both leaving the program. Our sources tell us that McKay is headed to Oklahoma, while Dixon is leaving to coach at Louisville.

Dixon, who just finished his fourth season at Clemson, is leaving Tigertown after just having his contract renewed by Clemson’s Board of Trustees’ Compensation Committee this past Monday. He just got a new two-year deal that saw his salary jump from $375,000 to $400,000.

McKay has been on Brownell’s Clemson staff for 13 seasons, and just finished his fourth season as Clemson’s director of recruiting. He spent two seasons as an assistant coach at UMKC from 2019-21.

Prior to that, McKay spent the 2018-19 season as Clemson’s director of recruiting and four seasons as director of operations. McKay assumed that promotion in 2014 after serving as Clemson’s video coordinator for four seasons.

Sources told TCI that McKay is expected to get a significant bump in salary at Oklahoma, while one source said this is a good time for him to grow.

The Tigers have won 98 games over the last four seasons since Dixon’s arrival, including 55 wins in the ACC. Dixon worked in lockstep with Billy Donlon and Brownell on the Tigers’ defense.

Dixon worked primarily with the Tigers’ wing players.

McKay and Dixon will be the third and fourth coaches Brownell has had to replace in the last two weeks. Long time assistant coach Dick Bender announced his retirement on March 25, while Donlon took the head coaching job at Eastern Michigan after the season came to an end in the NCAA Tournament.

The Compensation Committee approved the hiring of men’s basketball coaches Chad Warner and Chris Harriman this past Monday. In a press release, the athletic department also announced the official hiring of Andre Morgan to Brownell’s coaching staff.
